Ah yes, that was my friend's panel. The technological issues never got resolved and she ended up having to present the panel without any of the notes/outline she prepared. Sorry you did not enjoy the panel! I agree with you that it was not a very well presented panel but I think 90% of it was due to the tech problems and 10% less-than-stellar preparation(memorizing the entire panel would be ideal but quite a lot to ask for).

Oh, suck. D:

I think the con might want to consider booking the entire hotel for future dates so that things like overlapping with weddings will not occur ever again.

Wouldn't that be crazy expensive for the con management? :s And that cost get passed to attendees? This seems like a dubious course of action unless attendance this year was high enough to actually merit it... plus the hotel and the management being willing to actually do so.

How many registered attendees were there? Vs the room capacity of the hotel? I know some people were staying at other hotels in the area, but that doesn't mean much, and I know several people that live in Madison commuted to the con (including me) - so attendance is not representative of room need.

The question of "can the con book the whole hotel" boils down to "is it big enough?" I don't know how these things work.

I'll field this one.

In order to prevent another adjacent event, we don't have to buy out all the rooms in the hotel, just rent all the convention space (though this carries an expectation of selling hotel rooms, but let's ignore that). We would have done so for 2012, but other parties had already reserved at least portions of the hotel space on every weekend in our time range.

To answer the obvious followup of "Why not just book several years in advance?", we simply don't know how big our event will get or how quickly. If we reserve space 5 years out and have to move in 2, they're still going to expect us to pay for the remaining 3.

Another thing I found a bit problematic had to do with the viewings room. I've attended the Iron Butt Challenge for the last three years. Every year (this one was no exception) at least one of the films has had a nude/sex scene. If this kind of stuff is going to be in the films, the event should be 18+, or at very least, someone should announce that the film is not appropriate for kids. I realize that the Iron Butt Challenge is not the most family-friendly environment to begin with - considering the things the audience yells - but I think the things audience members say is on a different level than what's actually being shown on film. I don't know if the person on this forum who mentioned someone in the viewings room cursing was talking about me or not. However, if so, I still feel that cursing is not as objectionable as actual on screen porn.

We do know that the Iron Butt Challenge is not meant for younger viewers, and we have mentioned many times over the years that the Iron Butt is not meant for children. There is at least one staff member (often more) in the room, or observational monitor at all times. If for some reason a younger viewer did get in, we are to warn them and the adults they are with that this is meant for older viewers. However by law as long as they are attended by an adult and/or legal consented guardian (which most children are in the convention) we have no say in keeping them out, only to warn them. And thus far, we have had no problems with young viewers as the general audience knows better.

On the other topics I don't know about any swearing, but we did check in every 15 minutes this year, if some one was being rude at the wrong viewing we would have warned them. I know nothing about this happening to be honest. However with this mention of "porn" in our Iron Butt. Everything we had shown so far is no higher ratted then R for late night and Iron Butt, that includes DeathStalker III. At worst silhouettes from the hips up, or a quick shot of toplessness but NEVER have we shown anything truly pornographic in our viewing rooms. And in fact last year I'm fairly sure we had no "nude" or "love" scenes at all in the Iron Butt so I'm not sure where you are getting that from. Aside from that, thanks for your input.

I am really glad that Geek.Kon was able to get David Salo again this year. That man is truly awesome. If the entrance fee to Geek.Kon only allowed me to attend one of his lectures and nothing else, I think it would be worth it.

I will pass this on to David for you. I'm very glad that you enjoy his panels and I hope we can have him return as a guest as long as he's willing and available.

I guess not. I'll leave that up to your expertise... 8-)

If somebody is offended, please say that you personally are offended.
Not "somebody might be offended".
You can't protect a subset of people if they only exist hypothetically.

And for this flippant comment above:
Ugh. Are guest accounts going to have to be killed off?
I hate having to log in...

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but is a LAN gaming room even appropriate for a convention nowadays? Most of the problems with multiplayer PC gaming have been solved by Steam or whatever other online lobbies. I don't know when the nostalgia bomb is going to hit regarding now quaint games like Doom 2, Descent, Quake, Duke Nukem, Total Annihilation, or Mechwarrior 2, etc. that would need a lan but it doesn't seem likely yet.

On that subject, did a handheld wireless gaming room ever materialize? I recall seeing something like that listed as TBA, but never actually heard it announced. I still had fun just walking around collecting Mii's anyways.

Oh and food prices... Does the hotel know that they need to compete with McDonald's?

My only complaint was the wedding. It was like last year with the football players when everyone was telling us to keep it down, even when we were quiet. I've heard a lot of rumors floating around as to why there were allowed to have it during the con. But the majority of the people I know that mentioned it weren't happy that the hotel allowed it when they have a contract with the con. I've never seen an issue with drinking at Geek.Kon and it's such a refreshing thing to see from all the cons I've been to since 2004. But the wedding group brought a LOT of people that, when they drank, made the drunk people I've seen at cons look like angels. My girlfriend and I had issues on our floor because of it, even just being the elevator to go outside for some air.
I guess what would be nice, for me anyway, is some clarification as to why the contract with the con was not upheld by the hotel. Because I will agree with the other people that the loss of the atrium was a big one. And I also agree that, when sober, most of the people from the wedding were very nice. Only one guy was extremely rude to me and my GF in the elevator.

But I give you guys props for making everything work with the lack of space. And, just like my first time last year, I was astounded with how much variety was in the AA and DR <3 Your staff and volunteers are so very helpful. Despite the bumps I had at the con, I had a great time and very happy I was able to come back. Y'all keep up the good work <3

It seems you've misunderstood the situation at least partially. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the wedding booked their space before we booked the rest. We intruded on them, not the other way around. My understanding of hotel economics suggests the wedding had a much higher profit-to-effort ratio for the hotel. I'm pretty sure this was at least touched on in the program guide, if not other media.

As for the drinking, it's a wedding... in Wisconsin. I just hope no one drove home (probably having to only stumble up to a hotel room lead to heavier drinking. So, yay?)

If you mean that in relation to what I posted, than all I have to says is that I did not state "somebody might be offended", and I was not speaking in regards to a hypothetical subset of people, but in regards to myself. I thought I had made it clear in that post that I in fact was mildly offended. I now see that I did not actually make that point particularly clear. I apologize for that, and for my ignorant, uninformed criticism of the contents of the Iron Butt Challenge. I do not want to create enmity between me and anyone else at Geek.Kon. I love and respect all of you, and I only want anything I say to increase the enjoyment of this Kon for everyone. I am sorry if I was rude to anyone, and if so, I hope they will forgive me.

DoctaPhreak. I assure you that I do not think your comments were at all ignorant or uninformed. I've never been to the Iron Butt Challenge, nor seen the movies typically shown in it, but had I known that there was nudity or potentially offensive content being screened, I would have insisted that we make it a carded event. Now that I know, I'm going to make a push for that.

We need to be clearer with stating ratings in our video rooms in general. Just because a film is too old or obscure to have a rating, that does not mean it's rated G, and we need to make sure we're reflecting that and truly carding the showings if we're showing something not suitable for a certain age range. Certainly, those disclaimers should be very evident in our program guide for the events.

I thank you for your honest feedback. I'm sorry you feel that your comments are not valued. I assure you that they are.

We did have a portable gaming area in the video game room, just dont think it got used for that. there were a couple of tables set up with power.

@ particleman: Ah okay, I must have missed that when I went through the thread before posting. I just figured the con had a contract with the hotel for a certain amount of time. And I'm not the only person who had this idea. But thank you for clearing that up for me ^.^

lol I'm usually not around weddings, so I wouldn't know about drinking etiquette outside of Minnesota (and even then it's hazy for me XD)
